Staff Sergeant Brett Black has a bad feeling that something is going to go terribly wrong. And as a Recon Marine, he pays attention to his gut. Only nothing can prepare him for what he encounters when he arrives at home from the base. His wife is leaving him, and there is nothing he can do about it.

Abandoned with a kid, the super alpha-male has to become domesticated quickly or find a willing substitute to help him with his son. Only the substitute he finds is no substitution.

Courtney Lawless is a true wild card. The budding librarian loves the classics and carries herself like a lady by day. But she also is full of life and surfs the waves of the Atlantic Ocean by night. Since her parents won’t pay for college because of bad decisions in her past, the reformed bad-girl takes a job as Brett’s live-in nanny to finish paying for school.

Brett has never seen a woman of such complex duality. Used to a wife who won’t clean, cook or even talk to him, when he starts to live with Courtney, he realizes what he’s been missing his entire life. Educated, amazing and refreshingly honest, the only thing that that this transparent beauty hides from her new boss is that she’s also the Lieutenant Colonel’s daughter.

Faced with another deployment to Afghanistan soon, the brooding Marine is forced to come out his shell to fight for what he loves, only this time, the war is at home.

Enjoy the interracial must-read romance of the summer, The Grunt, the third a longest book in Latrivia S. Nelson’s Lonely Heart Series and today.

Special note from the author

As a proud wife of a decorated, United States Marine, I’m happy to write this book about finding love while serving the Corps. I think you’ll find Brett to be a strong alpha male with endearing qualities, and you’ll find Courtney to be a strong, loving woman. The combination makes for a classic love story that sizzles with passion but warms you from the inside with sincerity.

This is also the longest book in The Lonely Heart Series. As a full-length novel, I think you’ll enjoy the extra pages and a few laughs.

Like so many others, my husband was wounded in Iraq. His road to recovery was hard not only on us but also on our two children. It took a lot. Words cannot explain the pain and worry of receiving “the call” that your husband has been severely injured. As a young couple, we relied on our families, our faith in God and the military for support.

A part of the proceeds from this book will be contributed to Soldier’s Angels for those who have served and have been injured. We are aiming to present a check during the Christmas holiday. I would encourage you to consider them as your charity of choice as well.

Again, I hope that you enjoy.

Sincerely yours,

Latrivia S. Nelson

There were strong points and not so strong points in this book. Certain passages or scenes were engaging but there were a lot of grammatical errors, it took me out of the story more than a few times. I felt there wasn’t really a relationship between Courtney and Brett. I didn’t see them fall in love so much as being told they loved each other. It was instant attraction, a kiss, you blinked and she was moving in as the nanny and they were a couple. Much of the book was told from Brett’s perspective which gave him just a smidgen more depth, but at the end of the day it seemed he wanted a woman from the 50's to be housemaker and service him on command. I didn’t hate him or anything but I didn’t exactly “fall” for him either. And his PTSD was merely touched on and could have gone a lot deeper than it had. I think if you’re going to talk about a serious side effect of war then it should be raw and honest, and not used for a plot point.

I could have connected more with Courtney if we were given the chance to read about her day-to-day life in terms of taking care of Cameron while trying to finish school. It’s no easy task being with a toddler and trying to read, study and do coursework because they’re always hungry, have tantrums, create messes, etc. I have to say Cameron is probably the most well-behaved child I’ve ever read about, which is something because it seemed he lacked a routine and discipline while Amy had been alive.

One of the things I found extremely odd in the beginning was the plane crash. How Brett was told the same day it happened Amy had been one of the passengers on the plane. I’m no expert, but I’m thinking it would take that long if not longer just to recover all the bodies from the plane, then check the flight manifest, and then ID the victims. I don’t see that as something happening within a couple of hours but days at the most. But I digress. And Brett’s reaction to it all. For someone who seemed to want to work to save his marriage he certainly got over Amy’s death quick and in a hurry. I think Amy was created mostly as a contrast to Courtney and that was it.

Overall this wasn’t a bad story but it could have gone deeper and the characters could have developed more authentic and believable. Everyone got their HEA without any real stress, strain, or struggle.

Brett Black, Staff Sargeant in the Marines, just wants to be happy. He dreads going home each night to his wife, who only sees the bad in everything his does and argues with him incessantly. The one bright spot in his home life is his son, Cameron. When Brett's life is dealt another blow and he finds himself a widower and single parent, he sets out to find a nanny.

Courtney Lawless is a bright, bubbly personality who loves life. Her father and brother are high-ranking officials in the Marines, so anything she does never quite lives up to their expectations. Having gone through numerous majors in college, her father cuts her off. Finally deciding upon becoming a librarian, Courtney meets Brett and Cameron while at work. Not only do Courtney and Brett share instant chemistry, but she also connects with little Cameron.

She soon finds herself in need of a job due to the fact that her position at the library has been eliminated, so Brett offers her the position as Cameron's nanny. Part of her really wants the job because she needs the money, but another part of her is cautious because she is extremely attracted to the devastatingly handsome and strong Marine.

As she settles into her job, her bond with Cameron and his father grows. Courtney brought life back into Brett's home and for the first time in a long time, he actually feels part of a real family. As their relationship grows, Brett and Courtney must be careful and keep their growing feelings for each other a secret. Both Courtney's brother and father are Brett's commanding officers and the fact that he's involved with her could possibly jeopardize his career.

I really enjoyed this story! Brett and Courtney's chemistry was electric, but their feelings for each other were also tender and sweet. I loved seeing glimpses of Cameron and can fully understand how Courtney grew to love him as well.

There were a few typos throughout the book, but nothing too bad. The one thing I took the most issue with was Courtney's father and brother. I completely understood why they were so protective, but their interfering towards the end of the book left a bad taste in my mouth. The complete 180 degree turn of her father's attitude didn't seem realistic.

The Grunt is a great love story that wasn't too bogged down with heaviness and focus on race. It just told the story of two people who found love and refused to let outside forces tear them apart.
This was my first time reading this author and I loved this book. It was an IR romance but the book was more than that. It was about realizing that situations change you as a person and sometimes the normal for you just doesn't work anymore. The female character was very strong going against her father and brother' s wishes. The male character slowly realized what a functional relationship was like and came to the conclusion he wanted love in that type of relationship instead of the dysfunctional one he had experienced. The summary is basically we all want to be loved and genuinely accepted by another person and sometimes we have to cross racial lines in order to fulfill that desire. It is what fulfills your soul. The male character and young son responded remarkably and quickly to love and attention. This book was about love and family and doing the right thing. The sex scenes where great and thrilling. I will definitely read more from this author.
