Since the publication of his first monograph in 2009, Romanian artist Adrian Ghenie (born 1977) has established himself on both sides of the Atlantic as a preeminent painter of his generation, with his brutal canvases of faces slashed at, blurred, gnawed and erased. Ghenie intensifies the raw scream of Francis Bacon’s paintings to an even greater pitch, revisiting the Holocaust (as in one famous painting of Josef Mengele) and extending Bacon’s idiom of existential horror vividly into the present. Last year, his work featured in several museum exhibitions, including his first solo U.S. museum show at the MCA Denver and SFMoMA’s seminal group exhibition Six Lines of Flight. In March 2013, Pace Gallery presented his critically acclaimed New York debut. While Ghenie continues to explore the darker moments in European history, social and political abuses of power, as well as his personal history, his compositions have become conspicuously more complex over the years, as he has turned increasingly toward a brighter and more colorful palette, confidently shifting between figuration and abstraction. This book unites 80 of Ghenie’s key works from the past four years.

I was immediately impressed with Ghenies' style and vision upon seeing his paintings for the first time. A mastery of darkly atmospheric compositions, hinting at enough of a narrative to create haunting ambiguities. His second monograph for Hatje Cantz, now that the first is long sold out and going for ten times it's original asking price, was the 2014 release I was most looking forward to. I was surprised, however, by the radical stylistic departure of his newer work. The subtle earth tones and spare yet careful brushstrokes were gone, replaced by a much looser, expressionistic approach that incorporated seemingly impulsive bursts of vivid color. What began as disappointment that he had abandoned the more controlled style for an experimental mode has since changed... repeated readings make evident an incredibly talented artist still restless and continuing to evolve. In terms of production values, the book is beautifully designed - a cloth-wrapped spine and silver-embossed titles, thick and glossy acid-free paper, large high-res reproductions. If you're expecting the Adrian Ghenie of 2008, you might find the various 'Pie Fight' studies initially off-putting... but the Adrian Ghenie of 2014 has produced some fascinating work as well.
Great Book
Ghenie's work is bold and this work reproduces it with absolute fidelity. The blacks in his painting really feel like deep rich darks in the reproductions, and I applaud this. A great find, definitely a painter to keep an eye on.
